Imran and Qureshi were sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi have been sentenced to 10 years in prison by a special court of the country. They were sentenced to jail in the diplomatic cable (cipher) leak case filed under the State Secrets Act on Tuesday.

Elections will be held in Pakistan on February 8. The court gave this verdict just a week ago. Imran Khan's party Tehreek-e-Insaf is contesting the elections without their symbol.

The case alleged that former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan wanted to leak a cable as proof of his ouster. According to the Central Investigation Agency, Imran wanted to prove through that cable that Pakistan's powerful army conspired with the United States to remove him from power.

The case was filed against Imran Khan and Qureshi in August last year for allegedly violating the State Secrets Act.

It has been alleged that former Chief Secretary Azam Khan handed over the diplomatic cable to Imran Khan. Later, Imran Khan told him that he had forgotten where he kept the telegram and did not return it despite repeated requests.

Last month, Islamabad High Court Justice Miangul Hassa adjourned till January 11 the trial of the case against Imran as well as his government's Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in a special court. In the order, he said, the case had "legal defects".

Imran Khan is currently in Adiala Jail. It was there that the proceedings of the cable leak case were going on by setting up a special court. However, Imran appealed by challenging issues such as the ban on the media from framing complaints and publishing reports on the proceedings. Then the court gave the stay order.

On December 13, Imran and Qureshi were accused for the second time. After that, the special court started a fresh case under the Official Secrets Act last month in Adiala Jail.

In April 2022, Imran Khan had to leave the Prime Ministership after losing the no-confidence vote in the National Assembly. Then hundreds of cases were filed against him. On Tuesday, he was newly arrested in at least 12 cases related to the May 9 violence, including the attack on the army headquarters.
