Threads Profile Tied to Instagram Account for Deletion, Meta Clarifies

In an astonishing feat, Threads, Meta's alternative to Twitter, has amassed an incredible 10 million sign-ups within a mere seven hours, as revealed by co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. However, an intriguing condition accompanies this highly anticipated new service: Deleting a Threads account necessitates the deletion of the associated Instagram account.

Through its Supplemental Privacy Policy, Meta offers elucidation, expressing that although users retain the ability to deactivate their Threads profile as desired, the unequivocal erasure of said profile necessitates the complete deletion of their associated Instagram account. Expanding on this matter, Meta clarifies that a Threads profile is intrinsically intertwined with the user's Instagram account. The unveiling of this correlation has engendered astonishment among numerous users.

Threads, an app centered around text-based conversations, emerges as a formidable competitor to Twitter, the social media behemoth under the ownership of Elon Musk.

Introduced to users in over 100 countries, Threads was launched on Instagram, the immensely popular photo-sharing platform boasting a user base exceeding 2 billion. Among the rapidly proliferating alternatives to Twitter, Threads appears to be the most coveted thus far.

Expressing his vision for the app in a Threads post, Zuckerberg shared, "I believe there should exist a public conversations app with over 1 billion participants. Twitter had the opportunity to achieve this but fell short. Hopefully, we will succeed." Remarkably, within seven hours of its release, Threads garnered a staggering 10 million sign-ups, leaving Zuckerberg astounded, as evidenced by an emoji he used to convey his astonishment. This growth rate solidifies Threads as the fastest-growing consumer offering.

Several renowned brands, including Netflix, Amazon, NFL, and Pepsi, have exhibited their trust in Threads by becoming active participants on the platform. Interestingly, certain prominent entities such as Google, Apple, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Disney have chosen to maintain their absence from the Threads platform, at least as of the current publication timeframe.

Update, 7/6/23, 2:22 PM ET: In response to user feedback regarding the account deletion policy, Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, has provided clarification. Users now have the option to deactivate their Threads account to conceal their profile and content, set their profile to private, or delete individual Threads posts without deleting their entire Instagram account. Nevertheless, Threads and Instagram currently function as a unified account, meaning that deleting one results in the deletion of the other. Mosseri assures users that the company is actively exploring the possibility of allowing separate deletion of Threads accounts.
